CP Radhakrishnan Named NDA VP Pick; INDIA Bloc Next?

The NDA has named CP Radhakrishnan as its vice presidential candidate; the Indian bloc has not yet made a decision

With the nomination of CP Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP leader and current governor of Maharashtra, by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the contest for India’s next vice president has accelerated. Following the party’s Parliamentary Board meeting in New Delhi, JP Nadda, the national president of the BJP, made the announcement.

Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence, promptly contacted Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, and asked for the opposition’s cooperation in order to ensure a peaceful election. According to reports, Singh will also get in touch with MK Stalin, Mamata Banerjee, and Sharad Pawar, the other leaders of the INDIA bloc. In an attempt to steer clear of conflict, the NDA, which has a definite numerical advantage in Parliament, is portraying Radhakrishnan as a consensus candidate.

CP Radhakrishnan is who?

CP Radhakrishnan, who was born in 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, entered the public eye at a young age, joining the Jan Sangh and RSS at the age of 16. After winning from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999, he served two terms in the Lok Sabha after becoming the Tamil Nadu BJP secretary in 1996. As the president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, he was a well-respected organiser and politician with a clean image who actively worked on social and developmental issues.

Radhakrishnan has served as governor in recent years. In addition to Telangana and Puducherry, he was the governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He has served as Maharashtra’s governor since July 2024. He has gained respect from both parties because of his friendly relations with states and emphasis on development.

Three strategic points are highlighted by the BJP’s nomination of him:

Southern Outreach: The BJP’s attempts to broaden its influence in the southern region are highlighted by the elevation of a Tamil Nadu leader.

Clean Image: Most people consider Radhakrishnan to be a trustworthy, uncontroversial person.

Regional Balance: The BJP’s regional and social balancing strategy is reflected in Droupadi Murmu’s nomination after his victory as president in 2022.

The numbers support NDA

Every member of both Houses of Parliament has one vote in the vice presidential election. Votes are not weighted, in contrast to the presidential poll. There are 245 Rajya Sabha MPs and 543 Lok Sabha MPs, making a total of 788 voters.

Together with allies and friendly parties, the BJP-led NDA has a sizable majority in the Lok Sabha and considerable sway in the Rajya Sabha. Unless there is an unexpected cross-vote, this virtually guarantees Radhakrishnan’s victory. However, the NDA can demonstrate inclusivity and potentially win an uncontested victory by reaching out to the opposition.

The dilemma facing the Indian bloc

With more than two dozen parties, the Opposition INDIA bloc must make a difficult choice. Any competition would most likely be lost if there were not enough participants. However, putting up a candidate could have symbolic benefits, such as preserving unity and boosting spirits.

Among their choices are:

Putting up a candidate: This would represent a symbolic challenge to the NDA, even if it were a losing battle.

By abstaining, one could avoid showing weakness but run the risk of coming across as a sign of surrender.

Supporting the NDA candidate: Given Radhakrishnan’s spotless record, some people might support him, though this is unlikely.

Leaders of the Congress and INDIA bloc are currently debating their positions before the nomination deadline of August 21. Kharge is chairing the meeting.

The Significance of the Vice Presidency

The vice president is more than just a figurehead. As the Rajya Sabha’s chairperson, the vice president is essential in maintaining decorum during contentious discussions and legislative sessions. A well-respected presiding officer is crucial because the Upper House is frequently disrupted.

The constitutional significance of the position is further enhanced by the fact that the Vice President is next in line to take over as President if necessary. In addition, these elections have symbolic significance since they represent regional representation and inclusive political narratives.

Political Responses

Radhakrishnan’s nomination was praised by BJP leaders, who called him a devoted employee with decades of experience. Members of the Tamil Nadu BJP were proud, describing it as an acknowledgement of the state’s contributions.

Leaders of the opposition have indicated that internal talks are taking place, but they have remained cautious. Political analysts contend that while not fielding a candidate could indicate division, running, even in a symbolic sense, could fortify opposition resolve.

Previous Elections for Vice President

The current balance of power in Parliament is frequently reflected in vice presidential contests. Gopal Krishna Gandhi was defeated by M. Venkaiah Naidu of the NDA in 2017, and Margaret Alva was easily defeated by Jagdeep Dhankhar in 2022. The 2025 election is anticipated to continue the pattern of NDA dominance.

In conclusion

Politically and symbolically, the NDA’s choice to field CP Radhakrishnan is noteworthy. His nomination demonstrates confidence in the BJP’s parliamentary numbers, strengthens the party’s southern outreach, and accentuates his clean image. Although it is still positioned for an easy victory, the NDA has shown that it is willing to seek consensus by contacting Kharge and other leaders.

The election serves as a test of unity for the INDIA bloc. The decision to support, oppose, or abstain from the NDA will disclose a lot about its coherence and strategy. Whatever the result, this election highlights the Vice Presidency’s lasting political significance as a position that influences Rajya Sabha operations and indicates the distribution of power in Indian politics.
