G7 Calls on Iran and Israel Trump Withholds Endorsement, De-escalating

Amid growing tensions between Israel and Iran, leaders of the world’s most developed economies issued a concerted demand for de-escalation at the 2024 G7 summit in Apulia, Italy. According to a draft joint statement seen by Reuters and verified by two sources, the G7 pledges to maintain global market stability, particularly in the energy sector, and urges for swift action towards peace. Importantly, the document calls for moderation and communication from all parties while reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defence.

But when former US President Donald Trump, who was attending the conference as an advisor, refused to approve the text, the display of solidarity took a hit. Trump reportedly voiced his worry that the statement did not sufficiently back Israel and seemed to hold both parties equally accountable for the violence, according to those familiar with the negotiations.

The G7’s statement emphasises the value of regional stability and diplomacy while cautioning that escalation could spark wider instability in the Middle East. Leaders cited the recent surge in proxy conflicts, cyberattacks, and military exchanges as major dangers to global peace and economic stability. Important shipping lanes have already been impacted, raising oil prices and raising concerns about a worldwide cascade of effects.

The summit’s host, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stressed the need for a diplomatic solution and urged everyone to be cautious. Leaders who advocated for a single message of peace, such as Olaf Scholz of Germany and Emmanuel Macron of France, supported her.

Trump’s unwillingness to support the declaration serves as a reminder of the continued differences in Western foreign policy, especially with regard to how the United States handles Iran and Israel. His position is consistent with his past pro-Israel actions, such as relocating the American embassy to Jerusalem and pulling out of the Iran nuclear agreement while he was president.

The G7 countries are nonetheless dedicated to seeking diplomatic solutions and regional stabilisation in spite of this disagreement. The United Nations may now host talks, with neutral nations like Switzerland and Qatar potentially serving as mediators. Trump’s opposition shows the growing polarisation on Middle East and international diplomacy, even as the G7 pursues peace.
